On my visit to Iran in 2015, I stumbled into the Shah Cheragh mosque in Shiraz, without knowing what to expect.
I was rather surprised when I saw the interior, everything was covered in mirrors. I saw that earlier one time in Maschad in the shrine of Imam Reza, but this time photography was allowed. Of course I did snap a few shots. The background story behind the mirror decorations is so surreal, it must be true: During the cold war Iran importet mirrors from the USSR, but due to the bad roads all of them arrived broken. Instead of throwing them away, the Iranians used the shards for mosaics, and a new art style was born.
I for one, choose to believe that story. 🙂
Here a look into Shah Cheragh.
